With the Premier League season teetering on the verge of collapse for Liverpool, the potential signing of Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace has arrived not a moment too soon. While initial reports suggesting a January deal are premature, he is undoubtedly a player showing prominently on the club’s radar.

Liverpool need a midfielder who can dictate tempo, unlock space, and elevate those around him. Wharton fits that description perfectly.

Liverpool’s Midfield Crisis

It’s no exaggeration to say Liverpool’s current midfield is unrecognisable from the one that brought home the Premier League title in 2025. The inconsistency of players like Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister have left Arne Slot’s side looking short on both structure and spark. Curtis Jones has been impressive this season, but his future also remains uncertain with contract talks seemingly stalling.

More crucially, the Reds lack a natural metronome. Liverpool have tried to shoehorn stopgap solutions into the deep-lying midfield role for years now, and despite spending huge money, it is still yet to be addressed.
