Liverpool secured a valuable 1-0 Premier League victory over AFC Bournemouth as Alexander Isak marked Andoni Iraola’s return to the Vitality Stadium with the decisive goal.
Iraola received a warm welcome from the Bournemouth supporters following his successful spell with the club, but his Liverpool side found the afternoon difficult. Bournemouth competed strongly and created the better early opportunity when Evanilson’s clever flick forced Alisson Becker into an important save.
Liverpool had openings of their own. Bradley Barcola was denied by Djordje Petrovic, while Dominik Szoboszlai sent a dipping free kick narrowly wide. Florian Wirtz also fired over from close range before being incorrectly flagged offside.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 57th minute. Cody Gakpo drove forward and delivered into the penalty area, where Bournemouth failed to clear the danger. Isak reacted quickest, finishing from close range for his fourth Premier League goal of the season.
Liverpool were required to protect their narrow advantage rather than chase a second goal, with Alisson and the defence holding firm.
The victory gave Iraola three points against his former club and extended Liverpool’s encouraging defensive run to three consecutive Premier League clean sheets heading into the international break.
