Anfield Awaits a Proper Response
Liverpool vs Brighton | FA Cup 4th Round
There are nights when Anfield asks for defiance rather than flair. This feels like one of them.
Liverpool come into this cup tie having steadied themselves in midweek, not with fireworks but with resolve. After the City collapse that scarred Sunday, they went to Sunderland and found a measure of authority that has been too rare this season. Clean sheets have been scarce, belief has wavered, and yet there was something in that performance that hinted at a team rediscovering their own standards.
Now comes Brighton, awkward and capable, even in uneven form. Fabian Hürzeler’s side will not travel simply to admire the surroundings. They carry their own anxieties and will see opportunity in Liverpool’s thin resources at the back. The absence of Wataru Endo deepens that concern, and Arne Slot must manage bodies as carefully as ambition.
Still, momentum matters. Confidence can spread quickly through a crowd and into a team. Liverpool’s younger talents are beginning to play with greater conviction, Florian Wirtz growing in stature, Hugo Ekitike bringing invention, and Mohamed Salah hopefully hovering on the brink of one of those bursts that can transform a season.
The FA Cup won’t define Liverpool’s season, but it can shape it. A purposeful performance, energy in midfield, composure in defence, and Anfield will respond in kind.
