There are matches when the quality of the football matters considerably less than the result. Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park was emphatically one of them.
After successive defeats to Arsenal and Fenerbahce, three points were essential. Andoni Iraola needed a response, and although the performance lacked conviction for long periods, Liverpool found a way to win ugly.
Palace were comfortably the better side early on. Yeremy Pino struck the crossbar, while Alisson Becker produced several outstanding saves to prevent Liverpool falling behind. The Brazilian was magnificent, delivering a timely reminder of his world-class credentials following a difficult week.
Alexis Mac Allister’s clever header from Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick gave Liverpool a fortunate half-time advantage.
Liverpool improved considerably after the interval, with Bradley Barcola’s explosive movement creating Florian Wirtz’s beautifully taken goal.
That combination offered genuine encouragement. Wirtz has endured understandable scrutiny, yet his intelligence and technical ability are undeniable. His subsequent assist for Alexander Isak’s composed finish provided another glimpse of what this expensive attacking unit could eventually become.
Trey Nyoni’s introduction also reinforced my belief that Liverpool look more balanced with the youngster alongside Mac Allister. His composure and awareness continue to impress.
Defensively, concerns remain. Milos Kerkez struggled again, although the late penalty converted by Eddie Nketiah appeared extremely harsh.
Liverpool were far from convincing, and Alisson’s excellence concealed some uncomfortable weaknesses.
Nevertheless, winning ugly is an important quality. Successful teams cannot always rely upon fluency, particularly when confidence has been bruised.
Liverpool head into the international break fourth in the Premier League, with three valuable points secured and some attacking encouragement to build upon.
There is plenty for Iraola to address before Manchester United visit Anfield.
For now, however, the result matters most. Liverpool needed to win, and they did.
