Liverpool suffered another disappointing Champions League defeat as Fenerbahce came from behind twice to secure a 3-2 victory in Istanbul, leaving Andoni Iraola frustrated by his side’s defensive shortcomings.
The Reds started brightly and took the lead in the 25th minute when Trey Nyoni scored his first senior Liverpool goal following a deflected effort. However, their advantage lasted only four minutes as Mason Greenwood’s deflected free-kick brought Dirk Kuyt’s Fenerbahce level.
Liverpool struggled to establish control after the break, prompting Iraola to introduce Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo and Florian Wirtz. The changes delivered an immediate reward, with Isak heading home Gakpo’s cross in the 69th minute to restore Liverpool’s lead.
However, defensive mistakes proved costly once again. Archie Brown equalised in the 73rd minute after Liverpool failed to deal with a corner, before Vedat Muriqi headed home six minutes later to complete Fenerbahce’s comeback.
Despite further attacking changes, Liverpool failed to find another equaliser, extending their miserable record in Turkey.
Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha offered encouraging performances, but serious questions remain over Liverpool’s defensive organisation, game management and ability to protect leads as their Champions League campaign continues under Iraola.
