Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool: Reds exposed and directionless in bruising Champions League defeat

Liverpool endured a night to forget in Istanbul as Galatasaray claimed a 1-0 Champions League victory in front of a deafening crowd at RAMS Park.
Head coach Arne Slot made the bold call to leave Mohamed Salah and record signing Alexander Isak on the bench after the weekend loss at Crystal Palace, but his side again failed to click. Victor Osimhen gave Galatasaray the lead on 16 minutes from the penalty spot, after Dominik Szoboszlai was penalised for a foul on Baris Alper Yilmaz. The strike came seconds after Cody Gakpo was denied by Davinson Sanchez’s goal-line clearance.
Liverpool looked shaky at the back and relied heavily on Alisson, who produced a superb save from Osimhen before suffering an injury just before the hour. Slot responded by introducing Salah and Isak, yet the changes could not break down a disciplined Galatasaray defence.
The Reds thought they had a late reprieve when referee Clement Turpin awarded a penalty for Ibrahima Konate’s fall in the box, only for VAR to overturn the decision.
It capped a damaging evening for the Premier League champions, who must now contend with injuries to Alisson and Hugo Ekitike, while questions grow over their form ahead of Saturday’s trip to Chelsea.
