Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool: Reds Face Defeat in Champions League First Leg
Galatasaray secured a hard fought 1-0 victory over Liverpool in a heated Champions League night in Istanbul, taking a narrow advantage into the second leg at Anfield.
The decisive moment arrived after just seven minutes. Gabriel Sara delivered a dangerous corner and Victor Osimhen rose highest to head the ball across goal. Mario Lemina reacted quickest, guiding a close range header past Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
It was a familiar frustration for Liverpool, who have struggled to defend set pieces throughout the season. The early goal allowed Galatasaray to settle quickly and play with confidence in front of a raucous home crowd.
The hosts carried a threat throughout the first half, particularly through Osimhen. His pace and physical strength repeatedly unsettled Liverpool’s defence and helped Galatasaray create several promising openings. Mamardashvili was required to make an important save from Davinson Sanchez to keep Liverpool within touching distance.
Liverpool improved after the interval and began to dominate possession. Dominik Szoboszlai tested Ugurcan Cakir with a powerful effort from distance, while Hugo Ekitike saw a clear opportunity denied when the Galatasaray goalkeeper stretched out an arm to block his shot.
There was further drama when Osimhen appeared to double Galatasaray’s lead after a defensive mistake by Ibrahima Konate, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review. Liverpool also thought they had equalised during a goalmouth scramble, only for Konate to be penalised for handball after another lengthy check.
Despite registering 14 attempts on goal, Liverpool could not find a breakthrough against a determined Galatasaray defence.
The Champions League tie now heads to Anfield with Liverpool trailing 1-0, leaving everything to play for in the return leg.
