Jan Molby: Letting Andy Robertson Leave in January Feels Like the Wrong Gamble
The timing, the squad depth and the leadership issue all point to a decision that could hurt Liverpool more than it helps
I was asked about the reports linking Andy Robertson with a January move to Tottenham, and I will be honest, my first reaction was simple. Surely not. When you step back and look at it properly, it makes sense for Andy and for Spurs, but from a Liverpool point of view, it feels like the wrong time completely.
Andy has been very open about where he stands. He has spoken about being out of contract in a few months, about still having a job to do at Liverpool, but not necessarily the job he wants. He wants to play. With a World Cup coming up, regular football matters. That part is easy to understand. If you are Andy Robertson, a move where you play every week feels logical.
What I struggle with is Liverpool letting him go now. We already have defensive problems. We are short at the back, light on options, and relying heavily on players who are already covering multiple positions. Selling Andy Robertson in January would leave us in a position where Joe Gomez is effectively the only cover across both full-back roles and centre-half. That is not a small issue; it is a big one.
