Jan Molby: Liverpool Should Look at West Ham's Bowen and Fernandes
Liverpool’s recent wins have helped, but Molby still sees work to do, with Old Trafford offering the next big test.
I have watched enough football to know when something catches my eye straight away. That is where I will start, because there are a couple of players down near the bottom of the table who have done exactly that.
West Ham duo worth serious thought
If things go against West Ham United and they drop, then Jarrod Bowen and Mateus Fernandes would interest me.
Bowen is the obvious one. When you are losing a player like Mohamed Salah, you need to think about profile as much as numbers. Bowen is as close as you get in how he plays, direct, willing to run in behind, always a goal threat. He does not match Salah’s output, very few do, but he brings a similar shape to the attack.
Fernandes is different. He is young, mobile and technically very good. I like midfielders who can set the rhythm and he has that about him. He reminds me of the type of Portuguese midfielders who dominate games through movement and control. For me, he is a special player. If West Ham go down or even if they do not, I do not see him staying there long.
That is just how the game works. Relegation creates opportunities, and clubs at the top have to be ready.
Spurs talent with long term upside
The same applies to Tottenham Hotspur if they find themselves in trouble. I would not be looking across that squad thinking there are five or six ready made answers. I would be more selective.
Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall are the two that stand out for me.
