Liverpool 0-2 PSG: Clinical PSG Punish Wasteful Liverpool as Champions League Dream Ends at Anfield
Anfield Index's Post-Match Content After Champions League Defeat at Anfield
Liverpool’s Champions League journey came to an end at Anfield as Paris Saint-Germain sealed their place in the semi-finals with a 2-0 win on the night, completing a commanding aggregate victory.
Despite trailing from the first leg, Liverpool delivered a far more spirited and aggressive display in front of a raucous home crowd. Arne Slot’s side pressed with intent and energy, but the familiar issue remained: a lack of cutting edge when it mattered most.
PSG, composed and clinical, carried the greater threat in the first half. Giorgi Mamardashvili was called into action on multiple occasions, denying both Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele, while Marquinhos produced a crucial intervention to prevent Liverpool from taking the lead.
Slot gambled with his team selection, handing Alexander Isak a first start since December and initially leaving Mohamed Salah on the bench. That plan shifted early when Salah was introduced following an injury to Hugo Ekitike, but even with renewed attacking impetus, Liverpool struggled to turn pressure into goals.
The second half brought hope, with Liverpool pushing higher and faster, yet controversy arrived on 65 minutes. A penalty awarded for a challenge on Alexis Mac Allister was overturned after VAR intervention, a moment that seemed to drain momentum from the home side.
Seven minutes later, the tie was effectively decided. Dembele, found by Kvaratskhelia, unleashed a powerful strike from distance that beat Mamardashvili and silenced Anfield. As Liverpool chased desperately, spaces opened, and in stoppage time Dembele added his second, tapping home to underline PSG’s superiority across both legs.
Liverpool can take encouragement from the fight they showed compared to the first leg in Paris, but this was another European night defined by missed opportunities and fine margins. For the second consecutive season, PSG have proven a step too far.
The result leaves Slot with significant questions to answer as Liverpool’s season drifts towards a disappointing conclusion, with no silverware secured and Champions League qualification for next year still uncertain.
