Liverpool 1-1 Brentford: Reds Are Held By Brentford in Emotional Anfield Clash
Anfield Index's post-match content after Liverpool's draw with Brentford
Liverpool secured Champions League qualification with a 1-1 draw against Brentford at Anfield in an emotional afternoon dominated by the farewells to Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson. Arne Slot’s side only required a point to confirm fifth place in the Premier League and managed to do enough despite another uneven performance.
Salah nearly produced the perfect ending early in the match when his curling free-kick struck the post, while Alisson Becker was required to make an excellent save to deny Kevin Schade at the other end. Liverpool eventually found the breakthrough in the 58th minute when Salah provided a composed assist for Curtis Jones, who finished confidently in front of the Kop.
The lead did not last long. Brentford responded just six minutes later through Schade after Liverpool once again struggled to maintain control following a goal. The visitors threatened occasionally on the counter attack, but Liverpool held firm during a tense closing period.
Attention quickly returned to the departing club legends. Salah received a standing ovation when substituted in the 74th minute, while Robertson was warmly applauded late on. Brentford’s hopes of European qualification ended with the draw, while Liverpool secured a return to Europe’s top competition.
