Manchester United claimed a dramatic 2-1 win at Anfield as Harry Maguire’s late header sealed a classic in English football’s fiercest rivalry.
In a frantic finale, Liverpool piled forward in search of a leveller, but United’s defence held firm. Goalkeeper Lammens punched away a series of corners from Dominik Szoboszlai, while Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martínez produced vital blocks under pressure.
The hosts had earlier wasted a golden chance when Jeremie Frimpong’s cross found Cody Gakpo unmarked, only for the Dutchman to head wide in front of the Kop. It proved costly.
United’s breakthrough came in the 84th minute. After a corner was half-cleared, Bruno Fernandes recycled the ball with a superb first-time delivery to the far post, where Maguire rose highest to power home. It was a fitting reward for a player who has battled to reclaim his place in the side, and a reminder of Fernandes’ class in tight moments.
Liverpool had earlier drawn level through Gakpo following good work from Federico Chiesa, but Arne Slot’s side failed to build on their momentum. Mohamed Salah endured a subdued night before being substituted, while late changes brought energy but not end product.
Despite strong midfield efforts from Szoboszlai, United’s structure held firm. Their victory reflects growing belief under their new regime; disciplined, resilient, and ruthless when it mattered.
For Liverpool, wastefulness proved their undoing. For United, it was a statement win born of steel and precision.
