Liverpool 2-1 Southampton: The Reds Progress with Isak and Ekitike Goals

Liverpool moved into the Carabao Cup fourth round with a 2–1 victory over Southampton at Anfield in a match that brought relief but also frustration.
Arne Slot rotated heavily and handed debuts to Giorgi Mamardashvili and Giovanni Leoni, while academy pair Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha started. After a minute’s silence for former Liverpool Women’s manager Matt Beard, the match began in scrappy fashion. Southampton struck the bar and forced Mamardashvili into action before Federico Chiesa pressed high, won possession and set up Alexander Isak to sweep home his first Liverpool goal just before half time.
Southampton equalised late on when Shea Charles punished a lapse from a corner. Leoni then worryingly departed on a stretcher. Just when the tie seemed to be slipping, Chiesa surged forward again and crossed for Hugo Ekitike who made it 2–1 on 85 minutes. Moments later Ekitike was sent off for removing his shirt in celebration, meaning he will now miss the weekend trip to Crystal Palace.
Liverpool advance but looked far from convincing. Chiesa was the standout player, Mamardashvili looked composed on debut and Isak is off the mark.
