Liverpool 4-1 Barnsley: Super Subs Shine as Reds Win in FA Cup Third Round
They will face Brighton at Anfield in the next round....
Liverpool progressed into the FA Cup Third Round with a 4-1 victory over Barnsley at Anfield, although the margin of the win disguised a more competitive contest than many expected.
Six changes were made to the starting line up, one enforced by Conor Bradley’s injury, yet Liverpool still fielded a strong side. Barnsley showed early intent and almost took the lead inside the opening minute when a header struck the post, setting the tone for a lively first half.
The breakthrough came in the ninth minute through Dominik Szoboszlai, who produced a stunning long range strike into the top corner. Jeremie Frimpong doubled the lead before the interval with a sharp finish from the right. However, a costly error from Szoboszlai inside his own area allowed Adam Phillips to pull a goal back, ensuring Barnsley went into the break with belief. Half time score, Liverpool 2-1 Barnsley.
Liverpool made several substitutions after the hour mark, including the return of Hugo Ekitike from injury and the introduction of Florian Wirtz. Despite continued pressure from the visitors, Wirtz extended the lead late on with a neat finish after combining with Ekitike. In stoppage time, Wirtz returned the favour, setting up Ekitike to tap in and seal the result.
The win books Liverpool a place in the Fourth Round, where they will face Brighton at Anfield.
