Liverpool ground out a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the Stadium of Light, overcoming Sunderland on a night that will not linger long in the memory, but may yet prove significant in the context of the Premier League season. With Chelsea and Manchester United both dropping points the previous evening, the margin for error had narrowed. Liverpool responded, if not with flourish, then with resolve.

The result leaves Liverpool two points shy of the Champions League places. In a congested table, that matters.
