It has certainly been a year to remember...

Liverpool entered 2025 still chasing the lot, with that familiar mix of swagger and fragility that makes the club addictive.

It began with blows in both domestic cups, a shock FA Cup Fourth Round defeat to Plymouth Argyle, then a 2-1 loss to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. Europe offered its own brand of heartbreak, a penalty shootout defeat to PSG, who later went on to win the Champions League.

The season could have unravelled completely, yet Arne Slot steadied it, shaped it, and finished it with the Premier League title in his debut season.

But the title defence hasn’t followed the same script, even after around £450m spent on new players such as Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool sit fourth in the Premier League and were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Crystal Palace, beaten 3-0 at Anfield.

For a spell, Slot’s job looked untenable after nine defeats in 12 games, but the year ends with a seven game unbeaten run and four wins on the bounce against Inter Milan, Brighton, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves. It has been a year that never stayed still, in typical Liverpool fashion.
