Liverpool Left with Mountain to Climb After PSG Punishment
Anfield Index's Post-Match Content After Champions League defeat in Paris
Liverpool’s Champions League campaign is on the brink after a sobering 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their quarter-final in Paris.
Arne Slot’s side, reeling from their heavy loss to Manchester City, adopted a cautious approach with a five-man defence, but it did little to stem the tide against the reigning European champions. PSG took control early and never relinquished it.
The breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Desire Doue’s effort from the edge of the box took a heavy deflection off Virgil van Dijk, looping over Giorgi Mamardashvili and into the net. It set the tone for a one-sided contest in which Liverpool struggled to impose themselves.
Mamardashvili, deputising for the injured Alisson, produced several important saves to keep the scoreline respectable, including a sharp stop to deny Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. However, he was beaten again when the Georgian winger showcased his class, rounding the goalkeeper after a precise through ball from Joao Neves before finishing calmly.
PSG could have extended their lead further. Ousmane Dembele squandered multiple clear chances, while a penalty awarded for a challenge by Ibrahima Konate was overturned after a VAR review.
Liverpool, remarkably, failed to register a shot on target and offered little attacking threat, even after the introduction of Alexander Isak on his return from injury.
