Chelsea Punish Liverpool With Last-Gasp Winner
Estevao Willian delivered late heartbreak for Liverpool, striking deep into stoppage time to hand Chelsea a dramatic victory at Stamford Bridge. Wild celebrations followed, ending with coach Enzo Maresca sent off, and while the jubilant scenes reflected Chelsea’s relief, it marked a third successive defeat for the struggling Premier League champions.
Early Control From Chelsea
Chelsea took command early, Moisés Caicedo smashing in from 20 yards after 14 minutes past Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was standing in for the injured Alisson. Liverpool’s response was slow and laboured. Arne Slot reacted by introducing £116 million summer signing Florian Wirtz at half-time, having benched him following poor results against Crystal Palace and Galatasaray.
Liverpool Fightback Falls Short
Liverpool eventually levelled after 62 minutes, Cody Gakpo reacting instinctively inside the six-yard box to finish beyond Robert Sanchez after Alexander Isak had nudged on Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross. That should have been the reset Liverpool needed, but Chelsea refused to wilt.
Mamardashvili kept Liverpool alive with sharp late stops from Estevao and Jamie Gittens, while Enzo Fernandez somehow headed against the outside of the post with the goal at his mercy.
Late Collapse Seals Chelsea Celebration
Just as it seemed Liverpool would escape with a point, they relived their Crystal Palace nightmare. Estevao stole ahead of Andrew Robertson to turn in Marc Cucurella’s cross, sealing victory in ruthless fashion.
The defeat leaves Liverpool trailing Arsenal, who moved a point clear at the summit after beating West Ham United. Chelsea, meanwhile, will view this as a statement of intent, while Liverpool must rediscover their conviction fast if their title defence is to remain credible.
