Liverpool’s Injury Crisis Could Open the Door for Prolific Will Wright

With Liverpool’s forward options depleted, 18-year-old Will Wright’s remarkable numbers suggest his opportunity may be closer than ever.

Liverpool’s attackers seem to be falling down like domino pieces during the international week.

Already Alexander Isak’s and Cody Gakpo’s international duty has been cut-short due to injuries. Both have travelled back to rehabilitate at the AXA training centre.

For the former, the diagnosis doesn’t seem as bleak. Isak could even be available for Liverpool’s first game back against Manchester City.

However, the latter is definitely ruled out. Gakpo is expected to miss several weeks after a nasty tackle forced him off the pitch in Netherlands’ victory over Serbia.

With Hugo Ekitike out injured for the foreseeable option, Andoni Iraola may have to call upon some of his younger players, and that could pave the way for a young striker to get his first-team opportunity who has been on fire this season.

Remember The Name

Wright has scored six goals in six games at U21 level and went viral last week with a brilliant solo-goal against Rochdale in the EFL Trophy.

It was indeed a phenomenal goal and a phenomenal performance by the 18-year-old. It’s incredible to think that around 18 months ago, he was still on the books of a League Two academy.

Wright naturally stood-out in Salford’s ranks scoring over 50 goals at academy level in his final season and making his first-team debut.

But what’s been even more impressive is how quickly he has transitioned to Liverpool, and how much he continues to improve.

Wright has played 21 games for Liverpool’s U21 side and has 12 goals and six assists, so 18 goal contributions all together.

It means he is roughly averaging a goal or assist every 81.7 minutes on the pitch, so comfortably a goal or an assist per game.

What Makes Wright Special

Wright stands at 6’3 and he is still growing at 18-years-old. You’d be amiss to think given his height and his bulldozer like movement that he is merely just a target man.
