We’re not far away from the January transfer window opening and despite all the activity in the summer, it might not be as quiet of a window for Liverpool as expected.

There’s talk of Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo. It remains to be seen how actively Richard Hughes is going to be pursuing those options, but they are definitely on the club’s radar.

One way or another, Liverpool are going to have to address their depth in the centre-back department in particular, which looks like a real problem right now.

Arne Slot cannot be expected to continue the season with just three senior centre-backs, especially with one of those being Joe Gomez, who is out injured at the moment and who has a pretty rotten injury record in general.

Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk already look knackered and exhausted from the amount of games they have had to play this season.

There’s Wellity Lucky behind them, who offers an option and who is well-liked by the club’s first-team coaches. But he has no senior experience and would benefit from a loan spell in the EFL, rather than being thrown in at the deep end at Liverpool.

So, the only possible solution to address the problem and relieve the pressure on Konate and Van Dijk is to dive into the January market.

Why Centre-Back Depth Has Become a Priority

There’s a very obvious option Liverpool should be pursuing during the window in Jeremy Jacquet.

Liverpool have been linked with a lot of centre-backs but Jacquet is the crème of the crop. At 20-years-old, he has been a stand-out player for Rennes – an academy in France with a rich history for producing world-class players.

Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Eduardo Camavinga all came through from their academy in the last decade or so.
