Marseille 0-3 Liverpool: Mo Salah Returns as Reds Clinch Crucial Champions League Victory
Arne Slot's side now sit fourth in the league phase standings...
Liverpool continued their strong UEFA Champions League campaign with a composed 3-0 victory over Marseille at the Orange Velodrome, strengthening their position in the race for a top eight finish. Arne Slot’s side delivered a disciplined and efficient performance, showing control in key moments and capitalising on Marseille’s mistakes.
Dominik Szoboszlai gave Liverpool the lead just before half time with a cleverly taken free kick, rolling the ball under the wall to catch goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli off guard. The goal settled Liverpool and allowed them to dictate the tempo for long periods of the match.
Marseille showed more urgency after the break, with Mason Greenwood and Hamed Traore both missing good chances to equalise. However, Liverpool absorbed the pressure and doubled their advantage in the 72nd minute when Jeremie Frimpong’s cross deflected off Rulli and into the net for an own goal.
Substitute Cody Gakpo added a third in stoppage time, curling a low finish into the far corner to complete a comfortable away win. Mohamed Salah made his first start since November, while Virgil van Dijk reached his 350th appearance for the club. The result extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run to 13 matches and confirmed their growing authority in Europe under Slot.
