Match Preview: Liverpool Return to Premier League Action to Face AFC Bournemouth
The Reds have won just five of their last 17 league games...
Liverpool travel to the south coast this weekend with a golden opportunity to solidify their challenge for a Champions League spot. After a convincing 3-0 win over Marseille in midweek, Arne Slot’s men now face a Bournemouth side low on confidence, short on players, and desperately searching for answers.
This is the kind of fixture Liverpool must target if they’re serious about qualifying for the Champions League next season. The time for excuses has long passed. The Reds have stumbled too often in matches where they’ve been clear favourites. Now, at a ground where they’ve dominated in recent years, they have to show they’ve learned from their recent stutters.
Bournemouth’s Collapse
Bournemouth’s fall from grace this season has been stark. Earlier in the campaign, they looked like a team capable of battling for a European spot. They went unbeaten in eight matches after their opening day defeat at Anfield, winning four of those. But since the beginning of November, they’ve taken just 9 points from a possible 39, and now sit in the lower reaches of the table.
The injury crisis has crippled them. Star man Antoine Semenyo has left for Manchester City. Marcus Tavernier, Tyler Adams, David Brooks, Justin Kluivert, and several others are either long-term absentees or unlikely to feature. The cumulative toll has tipped them past the breaking point. Where once they had the attacking quality to compensate for a leaky defence, they now seem short in both departments.
Despite conceding 41 goals already, with only the bottom three faring worse, Bournemouth still play on the front foot. Their open style, while commendable, makes them vulnerable. Even during their recent slump, they’ve been in most games. They rarely get thrashed. But competitive defeats don’t put points on the board, and right now they’re sinking.
Liverpool Need Control
On the flip side, Liverpool’s biggest problem this season hasn’t been quality, but control. Whether through tactical imbalance or mental lapses, they’ve developed a nasty habit of allowing teams back into matches. Being 2-0 up hasn’t meant safety and they’ve been too charitable. If Bournemouth are to be put away, Liverpool must play with a level of focus that has often deserted them around the hour mark.
There’s no shortage of talent in this Liverpool side. Their attacking options of Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo offers real threat. But talent alone won’t win at the Vitality Stadium. Bournemouth are known for their intensity and don’t simply roll over when behind. Liverpool’s recent trend of drifting through matches, expecting wins to arrive by default, has to end.
Arne Slot’s Selection Headache
Slot has to get his selection and shape right. While the box midfield setup worked brilliantly against Marseille, it may not suit this Premier League clash. Against a deep, reactive Bournemouth, Liverpool need penetration, not control for control’s sake. A more traditional 4-3-3, with a natural centre-forward and width on both flanks, seems more appropriate.
The back four largely picks itself due to injuries. With Ibrahima Konaté expected to miss out following the tragic passing of his father, Joe Gomez will likely partner Virgil van Dijk in the centre. Frimpong, in excellent form, should retain his place at right-back. His pace and attacking intent are vital, but he must be protected. Managing his minutes will be key in the weeks ahead, whilst Milos Kerkez will continue at left-back.
The midfield trio is where Slot faces his biggest headache. Dominik Szoboszlai has been one of the standout performers this season and should start. Curtis Jones is deserving of minutes, but with Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister also pushing for selection, someone will have to miss out.
In the front line, Slot’s decision to bring Salah back into the side after the AFCON was surprising, but the Egyptian looked sharp and hungry. He should start again. His presence gives Liverpool a psychological edge and forces Bournemouth to sit deeper, which could open up spaces elsewhere.
Liverpool Predicted XI: Alisson, Frimpong, Gomez, Van Dijk (C), Kerkez, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Wirtz, Salah, Ekitike.
Bench: Mamardashvili, Endo, Robertson, Ramsay, Nyoni, Jones, Chiesa, Ngumoha, Gakpo.
No Room for Complacency
Every Premier League game from now until May is critical. With the top five separated by fine margins, Liverpool can’t afford to drop more points against teams in the bottom half.
Win here, and Liverpool set the tone for the rest of the weekend. Every other top-five contender plays after them. A victory puts pressure on their rivals and gives Slot’s men a platform to build on. Drop points, and the doubts return. Momentum matters. The performance against Marseille must become a strong foundation for more solid showings.
Score Prediction: AFC Bournemouth 1-2 Liverpool
