Searching for the Spark: Why Mohamed Salah Feels Off the Pace This Season
Liverpool’s Egyptian King has set standards that few players in world football can match, yet this campaign has raised questions. The truth behind it is far more complex than people think.
Why is Mohamed Salah underperforming at Liverpool?
A Decade of Incredible Standards
Over the course of almost a decade now, Liverpool’s Egyptian King has set unparalleled heights at Anfield.
Salah has not only established himself as one of the best players in the club’s history but one of the best to ever play in the Premier League.
Even by his standards, the 2024/25 campaign that saw the Reds clinch the title, was especially extraordinary. It helped him reach heights he has never before managed, including being a strong candidate for the Ballon d’Or.
Is Salah Really Regressing?
But now, just a few months later, there’s a feeling that Salah has regressed. Some Liverpool supporters even want him dropped from the team.
Is this without merit? Sure, Salah hasn’t played to the standards he has set. But neither have the rest of his teammates, barring perhaps only Dominik Szoboszlai.
Salah’s numbers and output may be down, but he’s still the player with the most goal contributions in all competitions (8) for Liverpool.
He’s still created the joint most big chances (5) in the Premier League and the fifth most chances (21) overall.
Ultimately, you have to question whether that is a player worth dropping, considering he’s still making an impact in the final third.
The answer is obviously, no. There is a more nuanced way to explain why Salah’s numbers are perhaps not as glittering as they were last season, and this has nothing to do with him having regressed as a player and become worse in a matter of months.
