Senesi’s defensive output and ball progression make him a rare free-market opportunity for Liverpool.

Liverpool’s defensive rebuild looks in good shape, especially if Ibrahima Konate extends his contract with the Reds.

Even if he doesn’t, the likes of Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are an exciting duo and behind them Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye will be integral squad players for years to come.

However, looking ahead to next season, with or without Konate, you have to argue that Liverpool will need a bit more experience.

Why Liverpool Need Experience in Their Defensive Rebuild

It looks like a genuine possibility that Joe Gomez could leave the club, having entered the final year of his contract.

And if he leaves, Liverpool will need to bring in a more versatile centre-back.

They already tried to do that last summer. Many envisaged Marc Guehi as someone who would replace Virgil van Dijk or Konate but in fact it was obvious Liverpool’s intention was for him to be the Gomez or Jarell Quansah replacement.

Obviously, in the end Liverpool pulled out of the deal. Manchester City gazumped the Reds’ offer with a much better financial incentive for both Guehi and Crystal Palace.
