Liverpool’s centre-back department took centre stage during the January transfer window. Both for the players Richard Hughes did sign and also for those who he did not sign.

Marc Guehi was passed upon, but Liverpool did bring in Jeremy Jacquet, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye.

Three young centre-backs all under the age of 21. They alongside Giovanni Leoni represent the future of the club.

However, given Liverpool’s lack of depth in the centre-back roles and the uncertainty that surrounds the future of Ibrahima Konate, this feels like only the beginning of the metamorphosis of the club’s backline.

If Konate leaves on a free contract, Liverpool will probably have to sign another centre-back this summer.

If Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk do not extend their contracts beyond 2027, Liverpool will have to bring in further reinforcements.
