Three Points, Thin Ice
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Liverpool | Premier League Review
Liverpool left the City Ground with three points and very little else to boast about. For 45 minutes, they were ragged, reactive, second best in every duel that mattered. Forest played with hunger and clarity, Liverpool with hesitation. It was as poor a first half as this side has produced all season, and there’s plenty of competition.
And yet they survived it.
That’s the detail worth holding onto. When the midfield was being overrun and possession was treated carelessly, they at least defended their own box with a degree of stubbornness. Alisson stood firm, Konate and Van Dijk blocked and cleared, and the damage remained contained. In this league, you are often asked to endure before you are allowed to play.
The second half brought improvement, not beauty. There was more intent, more territory, more pressure. Rio Ngumoha’s cameo shifted the mood, Alexis Mac Allister kept going after the frustration of a disallowed goal, and eventually took his moment. It was not elegant. It was necessary.
Much will be said about Arne Slot again. Some will preach patience, others demand change before breakfast. The truth is simpler. It’s clear now he’ll be there until May, and the arguments will rage on regardless. At times, it feels like the players are performing for pride and the badge rather than for the man in the technical area, but that debate can wait.
In this race for the top five, aesthetics are a luxury. Even Arsenal have been sloppy, City have stumbled, and everyone has had ugly afternoons. What counts now are points. Liverpool found three when they scarcely deserved one.
It may not convince, but it keeps them breathing.
