Liverpool are entering a summer of uncertainty and transition. Andy Robertson has confirmed his intention to leave at the end of the season and with him could go a huge chunk of leadership, personality and experience from the dressing room.

Mohamed Salah is leaving. Alisson Becker is edging closer to a possible move away amid interest from Juventus. Joe Gomez is expected to depart after a decade of service. Alexis Mac Allister continues to attract attention after worrying decline this season. Curtis Jones, one of the club’s own, also looks set to move on after seven years around the senior setup.

Thankfully for Liverpool, captain Virgil van Dijk remains in place. His presence still matters more than ever. Yet even his current contract expires next summer, although there remains time for that to be addressed.

Leadership at Liverpool has never just been about an armband. It is about standards, personality and carrying responsibility when things become uncomfortable. That is why choosing the next vice captain matters. But who could it be?
