Why Liverpool like Spurs' Bergvall, strong final third data but unclear midfield role
Third man runs explain high attacking involvement
When I look at Lucas Bergvall, I find myself in a slightly unusual position. There is clearly strong interest from top clubs, and I have been told that Liverpool really like him, to the point that some analysts adore him. But when I review the data and compare it with what I see, I struggle to align with that view fully.
That does not mean there is no talent there. There is the question of whether that talent fits what Liverpool actually needs, particularly in midfield. When you break the profile down properly, you start to see a player with clear attacking output but also some fairly significant gaps.
Attacking output stands out in a struggling side
If you start with the attacking numbers, you can see why people are excited.
For a Tottenham side that has been performing poorly, some of Bergvall’s metrics are strong. He is in the 98th percentile for touches in the box, 95th percentile for assists, and 93rd percentile for goal contributions. His expected goals sit at the 64th percentile, which is solid for someone who is not playing as a pure forward.
