Right, so here’s the thing. Liverpool have made their move for Alexander Isak. That is not a rumour anymore, it is not hearsay, it is real. David Ornstein broke it, and I had to jump straight on to say what I think. Liverpool have contacted Newcastle. We have told them we want the lad. And I genuinely think it makes perfect sense.
This is not some speculative poke in the dark. This is Liverpool, with purpose, with intent. We want Isak. We know he wants to come. You do not go knocking on Newcastle’s door unless you already have a green light from the player’s camp. You just don’t.
We are talking about a fee in the region of £120m. That is a huge number, but it is the right move. You do not make an approach like this halfway through July unless you are serious.
Isak is the best number nine in the league
I have said it before, and I will say it again. I think Alexander Isak might be the best number nine in the world. Not just in England, in the world. And no, I am not saying he is the best goalscorer. That is probably still Haaland. But Isak is a better footballer. He brings more to the table.
He links up play, he drops deep, he creates space, he works hard off the ball, and he plays with intelligence. He is not just a finisher, he is a creator, and he is a presence. Put him in this Liverpool team, with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Florian Wirtz around him, and he goes up another level again.
We are not just trying to fill a gap left by Diogo Jota, may he rest in peace. We are trying to evolve. Arne Slot is not looking for a stopgap or a safe option. He wants a top number nine to push us further. That is what Isak would do.
Newcastle's problem is our opportunity
Now, Newcastle keep saying he is not for sale. That is the official line. But everyone knows these things always come down to what the player wants. If Isak tells them he wants to go, that changes everything.
And here’s the thing, I do believe he does want to join Liverpool. Maybe not publicly, not yet, but behind the scenes, I think he has made it clear. He has been there for three years. His value has doubled. He has done what he was brought in to do. He has scored goals, played brilliantly, and helped them into the Champions League. Now it is time for the next step.
For Newcastle, selling him would make business sense. The £60m they paid for him is now down to about £24m in book value. If they sell for £135m, that is £111m of profit on the books. That is a huge number for their PSR. It gives them the flexibility to go big in the market. They can reinvest in five or six players, and still have room to breathe.
They want Hugo Ekitike, and they have wanted him since 2022. He is cheaper, younger, and has potential. But he is not Isak. Nobody is pretending he is. Still, if they want to sign Ekitike and others, they need to sell someone. And Isak is their biggest asset.
Liverpool are serious about building something
This is not just about replacing a player or reacting to a situation. This is Liverpool being proactive. We have already signed Florian Wirtz for a club-record fee. That tells you everything. We are not messing about. We are going big, and we are going hard.
We have not chased other strikers. We looked at Julian Alvarez, maybe. But Isak has been the one. His people know it. We likely spoke to them back in February or March. This has been bubbling under for a while.
If he wants to stay in England and win things, there is only one place to go. Not Arsenal, not United, not Chelsea. City have Haaland, so that is out. Liverpool is the move. We just won the league under Arne Slot. We are building something special.
Imagine this team. Wirtz on the left or in the ten. Salah on the right. Isak up top. Alexis Mac Allister in midfield. Virgil and Ibou at the back. Alisson in goal. That is a team full of elite players. Add Rodrigo on the left, as is being suggested, and suddenly we are talking about having the best player in eight different positions.
It is doable, and we should do it
Financially, this works. We have already spent about £196m this year, but we have brought in £54m. We are only £140m down, and we barely spent last year. The money is there. We have plenty of players to sell. Darwin Nunez could bring in a big fee. So could Luis Diaz. If we move Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton, that could bring us close to £200m in sales.
We can do this. We can buy Isak, Rodrigo, and maybe even a centre-back, and still be fine. We are in great shape.
This is the time to go bold. This is the time to act like a club that wants to stay on top. We are Premier League champions. If we get Alexander Isak, we are not just defending the title; we are going out to dominate.
And if we pull this off, you might as well wake the rest of the league up in five years. Because we are coming, and we are coming strong.
